Improving the A38 and A50

Kate Griffiths MP

Burton & Uttoxeter are firmly located in central England. We have a number of critical roads that pass through our local area that connect our country including one of the longest A-roads in the UK, the A38, and the A50 which connects the East & West Midlands. These important roads are vital for both local residents and the wider economy but both need improvements if they are to be made better and safer.

A38

The A38 is a vital road link connecting Burton with the rest of the Midlands and the south of the country. Speeding on this road has been a perennial issue, as have a number of slip roads which are small and hazardous to traffic exiting and entering the dual carriageway. Congestion and flooding also affect the A38, and this often has a knock-on effect to the roads running through Burton, as transient traffic is forced to use alternative routes through residential areas.

I am bringing together neighbouring MPs to call for new investment from the Government and Highways England to improve several of the junctions and slip roads of the A38 to make this road safer and easier for all road users.

A50

The A50 regularly sees a build-up of traffic on the Uttoxeter bypass due to the two roundabouts that disrupt traffic flow. With this comes increased local air pollution, and a greater risk of collision due to the number of cars in closer proximity. Building on the benefits 'Project A' has delivered with a new purpose-built junction to the west of Uttoxeter, I will continue to campaign for the delivery of ‘Project B’. This would see the removal of both the McDonald's and Derby Road roundabouts with a new junction built to the east of Uttoxeter to ease congestion and improve road safety.
